Course hosted on SAGECare learning platform
Family caregivers give time and love to help older adults. But many face big challenges especially in diverse communities.
Angela’s Story
Angela, age 52 and African American, cares for her dad with dementia. She works two jobs and spends evenings helping him with medicine and doctor visits. Angela often feels alone because most caregiver resources don’t match her culture or needs. She also struggles with mistrust in healthcare and finding providers who understand her background. When Angela found a support group that understood her, she said: “I felt seen for the first time.”
Why This Training Matters
- Different experiences: Caregivers from African American, Native American, Asian American, Hispanic/Latino, LGBTQ+, and Southeast Asian communities face unique struggles.
- Cultural understanding helps: Knowing their stories leads to better care.
- Inclusive systems make a difference: Organizations that value diversity create safer, stronger communities.
Daniel’s Story
Daniel, age 60 and gay, cares for his partner, Mark, who has advanced Parkinson’s disease. In healthcare settings, people often think he’s “just a friend.” Daniel worries about discrimination and struggles to find providers who respect their relationship. When Daniel found an LGBTQ+-friendly care network, he said: “For the first time, I felt safe bringing Mark to appointments.”
